Thirty thousand (30,000) kids died of hunger in my TV today. I can’t process that information. I just can’t. Would it register differently in my mind and heart if the TV added another zero (300,000) or another two zeros (3,000,000)? I changed the channel. To an ad for that kind of deodorant I can’t stand. Reminds me of the smell of my custodian job back in first year college. But I was still thinking about Alex Trebek trying not to look awkward beside that little orphan in Namibia, or was it Nigeria? Such big, sad, knowing, dark eyes. I’ll take “Soul-boggling, conscience-numbing facts” for twelve hundred please Alex.

30,000 dead in 1 day? Canada’s population in 10 days. I used to give to an organization to sponser a child. They continued to send me fat envelopes each month full of high-end glossy fliers with images of even more children dying. If they stopped “preaching to the choir” perhaps they too could sponser a village or 2.

Tony Campolo once said something like: “Thirty thousand children around the world are dying today from preventable causes and most of you don’t give a shit. And now many of you are more upset that I said ‘shit’ than you are about those dying children.
I get the feeling that for you he could sub the words “high end glossy fliers” for “shit?” ... or am I mis-understanding you? Do you really mean to say that the glossy fliers are worth wasting a thought on compared to the children – and what you and I should be doing about them?
