You’re right, the backyard is the one place on earth not listed among the Lonely Planet titles, and I agree that it would be refreshingly awkward if more people spent vacation and exploration time closer to home. However please note that Lonely Planet do publish a Guide to Experimental Travel which is pretty close to what you’re suggesting, with ideas like backpacking at home, exchanging house keys with a friend for a week to try living like them, etc etc. For some pioneering ideas on this amusingly awkward spin on travel see also A Mis-Guide to Anywhere.
