Even with a red carpet, black tux, and white satin V-neck gown, Titus and Kaylie’s wedding was anything but ordinary.
It wasn’t the music (Mendelssohn’s Wedding March) or the location (a high-end boutique selling upscale food, clothes and jewellery.) It was the fact Titus and Kaylie didn’t even know each other’s names. That’s because they’re dogs: Titus is a Jack Russell terrier, Kaylie a miniature poodle.
“Pets are more human than ever before,” said Jeff Kress, who, along with his partner Terry McAstocker, celebrated the opening of the Titus Boutique in London, Ontario last fall with the puppy wedding. “They’re definitely part of the family, so people are being more inventive with what they do with their pets.”
Pet weddings? Why not? “Basically, they now have a dog version of anything we (humans) can get,” said Kress. “Or even a cat version.” According to American Pet Products Manufacturers Association (APPMA), in 2007 Americans spent $41.2 billion on their pets, buying everything from organic, vegan dog food and canine-friendly “Bowser Beer” to a $1.8 million dog collar from I Love Dog Diamonds.
“It’s just for the fun of it, although some people are a lot more serious about this stuff,” said Kress. “I think that whatever you believe is good for you – and not everyone else has to believe in it.”
